Torre del Mar which means tower-of-the-sea, is the main beach area of Velez-Malega, which is the capital of Axarquia. This area used to be predominant with sugar plantations and this type of agriculture used to be its main income but now it lends itself to tourism and where the sugar once stood now grows fruit and other produce, which are locally sourced by the nearby restaurants.
It has a generous stretch of sanded beaches tide-blessed by the Mediterranean Sea. A promenade hugs the other side of the beaches to make easy walking to the marina at La Caleta de Valiz. The beaches are well cared for with excellent provisions to ensure a comfortable stay.
Dining is exquisite in Torre del Mar, restaurants and bars line the promenade offering traditionally prepared fish freshly cooked from the daily catch.
