Welcome to our selection of holiday homes to rent in Alhaurin de la Torre, Spain.
Once a very separate town, Alhaurin de la Torre is in the process of being swallowed up by the larger conurbation of Malaga. Many people who work in the city are choosing to live in the smaller town of Alhaurin de la Torre, which means that there are lots of residential areas but not many hotels or holiday rental properties. On the plus side, you can find of practical amenities in the town, such as supermarkets, pharmacies and launderettes, as well as the historical sites that have survived the decades of development. Unfortunately, the Moorish tower or “Torre” that gave the town its name has not survived, but there are plenty of other interesting buildings and gardens to enjoy.
One of the most popular attractions in Alhaurin de la Torre is El Retiro, a garden established in the 17th century by the Bishop of Malaga. The gardens once belonged to his private home, but are now open to the public. As well as being home to gardens and pleasant walkways, the Retiro is also home to a collection of plant and animal life, with each area of the gardens trying to recreate the natural habitat of those species which can now be seen in it; for example, an area which looks like a desert and is home to a collection of cacti. The house itself, where Fray Alonso de Santo Tomás retired all those centuries ago, has also been restored and now hosts cultural events and temporary exhibitions.
The Moorish tower may no longer be standing, but you can still find some historical buildings, monuments and ruins hidden among the residential quarters of Alhaurin de la Torre. Some are out of reach on private land, but others can be found in the most unusual places; you would probably pass right by them if you chose to explore without the Carta Arqueológica produced by the local town council, in an effort to try and save what ancient archaeology and historical buildings still exist in the town. The town has his roots back in Roman times, and visitors can see the ruins of some of those original buildings in the suburb known as La Alquería. These days, La Alquería may be full of residential streets, schools and shops, but it began life as a 3rd century hill fort! Some of the remaining ruins are on public land, but you will need the map and instructions provided by the town council to find them in this maze of residential homes.

Things to do
The gardens of El Retiro - The gardens of El Retiro are undoubtedly the biggest attraction that Alhaurin de la Torre has to offer. They were established in the 17th Century by Fray Alonso de Santo Tomás, the bishop at the time. Originally used by him as a retirement home, the garden offers all spectators a beautiful range of scenery and some wildlife. Each part of the garden offers a natural habitat to the wild life that lives there from a desert area to a tropical swamp.
In the centre of the garden is where the manor house is situated. Over the years the manor house has been restored. The gardens once belonged to his private home but are now open to the public.
Lauro Golf - The 'Lauro Golf' golf course is located between Alhaurin de la Torre and Alhaurin El Grande. It was built by Folco Nardi in 1992. There are 27 holes throughout the course. Situated in the foothills of the Sierra de Mijas Mountain range meaning that stunning views are a certainty.
