Estepona is a popular holiday resort on the Costa del Sol, located between the glamorous town of Marbella and the popular day trip destination, Gibraltar. Unlike many resorts along this stretch of coastline, Estepona has managed to resist the high-rise developments and still has a lot of its original Spanish features. Restaurants and bars in Estepona tend to serve Spanish food and drinks too, rather than the full English breakfast and imported beers that you get in most of the other Costa del Sol towns.

The main beach in the centre of Estepona is La Rada, a wide stretch of sand backed by a two kilometre promenade and lots of beach bars, all serving snacks and drinks until late at night. The promenade is busy during the day and into the evening, when a small market selling local crafts and souvenirs opens. One of the newer beaches, quieter than La Rada, but still with plenty of amenities, is El Cristo just to the west of the marina. The atmosphere is often quite lively and El Cristo has become popular with younger people and families with young children. The sheltered location means swimming is safer here, though a lifeguard is also on duty at all times during the summer.

To the east of Estepona the Costa del Sol's first purpose-built naturist resort, Costa Natura, opened recently and is home to some great beaches. Although the resort is technically for members and residents only, temporary memberships for a shorter period are available is you fancy trying nude sunbathing in a safe and secure environment.

The small marina at Estepona is a pleasant place to take a stroll in the late afternoon or early evening, looking at the mix of tourist yachts and traditional fishing vessels. There are lots of fish restaurants in this part of the town and it is here that you will find most of Estepona's night life, including many discos and nightclubs that only open at midnight. If you want a quiet holiday, make sure your accommodation isn't close to the marina!

The pretty old town of Estepona is well worth exploring, and many tourists from other areas of the Costa del Sol travel here for a day trip. The 15th century church that once stood in the town has been reduced to ruins, with only one tower remaining standing; though the Torre del Reloj is now the oldest religious structure in this part of Spain. If you are unlucky enough to have a rainy day while in town, there are four museums in the bullring, one dedicated to the sport itself, while the others tell the history of Estepona and its surrounding region.
