Located just inland from the Costa del Sol, the small town of Manilva has ancient roots, but has only really expanded in size since the 1970s when developers started to build more tourist accommodation and facilities. Although Manilva is not actually on the coast, it is only a few kilometres away from the popular port and marina of Puerto de la Duquesa and the seaside village of Sabinillas.

Manilva is ideally located for the stretch of sands between Punta Chulera in the south and the village of Sabinillas in the north. The quietest beaches can be found at the southern end, away from the tourist centres of Puerto de la Duquesa and Sabinillas itself; though bear in mind that quieter beaches often mean fewer facilities too. At the southern end of Manilva's coastline, the beaches are mainly rocky coves, which can be quite tricky for smaller children to get down to, though the water is much safer and calmer between the headlands and cliffs. Punta Chulera in particular offers shallow water that is very clear; ideal for snorkelling! Playa del Gobernador, further north, is the first of the more open and sandy beaches near to Manilva, while El Negro, a couple of coves further on, is the first that offers tourists facilities like a beach bar and showers.

Because it is located a little way inland, visitors to Manilva can choose whether to head for the beach or head for the hills. The mountains behind the village include the area known as the Sierra Utrera, an interesting geological feature that has formed a gorge, with impressive views and walking trails for those who are feeling energetic. Explorers might be lucky enough to stumble across one of the many caves or underground rivers that dot the area. Also located within the mountains close to Manilva are the impressive Hedionda Roman baths, a building dating from the 1st century BC that takes advantage of a natural spring producing water with a high sulphur content – said to be good for skin conditions and muscular problems. Modern visitors can still take the waters, though the baths are usually very busy on summer weekends. If you want to really relax, try and get there during the week when the crowds should be fewer. There is an area nearby for sunbathing and a small restaurant where you can buy snacks and drinks.
