VILLAS AND APARTMENTS TO RENT IN CORDOBA, SPAIN.
|
Welcome to our selection of holiday homes to rent in Cordoba, Spain.
The city of Cordoba, located in the Andalucia region of southern Spain, is the largest urban area that has been named as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. Some of the most famous buildings include the Great Mosque, Roman ruins such as the amphitheatre and the forum, the Synagogue in the Jewish quarter, as well as the Roman and medieval city walls and their many gates and fortresses. Cordoba is also a very green city, with walks along the banks of the River Guadalquivir and a number of public gardens.
The Great Mosque of Cordoba, now the city's cathedral, is a huge site that was taken over by the Catholic Church in the 13th century. Inside, the church still feels like a Muslim place of worship with a layout and artwork that would be more at home in the Middle East than in Europe. There are fine examples of Islamic art and architecture throughout the building and in the gardens surrounding it too. The city's Synagogue is just as historically important as it is one of the few places worship in Spain that were built before the expulsion of the Jews from the country in the 15th century. Many Muslims in Spain are campaigning for the right to worship in this historically important site.
There are many Roman sites in and around the city of Cordoba, some little more than ruins while others, such as the mausoleum, has survived the centuries virtually intact. The Roman bridge, which dates from the 1st century BC, still spans the River Guadlaquivir next to the Tower of Calahorra, one of the many fortresses that make up Cordoba's ancient defences. Visitors wandering through Cordoba's ancient streets will find themselves stumbling across excavation sites and Roman buildings that have become part of the modern structure of the city. One of the most important archaeological sites is on the outskirts of Cordoba at Cercadilla where tourists can visit the remains of the Emperor Maximilian's palace.
There are several public gardens and parks throughout Cordoba. Some, such as the Jardines de la Victoria or the Jardines de la Victoria are laid-out gardens with sculptures and flower beds, which others like the Parque Conde Cruz and the Parque de la Asomadilla are open spaces with walking and cycling paths. One of the most interesting open spaces in the city is the Paseo de Cordoba, a tour of several kilometres on a former underground train route, complete with fountains and water sculptures which help keep the air fresh.

Things to do
Roman Bridge
Looking at the roman bridge in Corboda, You can barely see any of the roman features that the bridge once had. This is because over the decades, the bridge as seen much reconstruction. Little of the original structure of the bridge stands; it has more of a medieval theme to it, which it obtained through reconstruction during the 19th century. Until the 20th century, it was the only bridge connection both of the riverbanks together until the San Rafael Bridge was built. Halfway across the bridge, there is a statue of Saint Raphael, which has been there since 1651.
Corboda City walls
The Corboda City walls were built to mark the boundaries of the Jewish quarter and were later extended nearly touching the Arab walls. Those walls are among the more conserved areas in the city mainly due to the fact that during the 15th century, during the Christian conquest, several of the monarchs ordered that they be restored.
Tower of La Calahorra
The Tower of La Calahorra is located on the southern side of the roman bridge. During the 18th Century, the tower was a prison then during the 19th century, it was turned into an all girls’ school. At the present moment, it is a museum for Dialogue between Cultures. In the museums, it depicts how culture was in the 10th century with three cultures living side by side known as Christianity, Muslim and Judaism.
Mezquita / Cordoba Cathedral
Standing in Corboda is one of the most beautiful mosques ever to be created by the Moors. It can be found in the centre of the city in between the Jewish and Moorish quarters.
