The region of Abruzzo is located in central Italy, on the Adriatic Sea, around 50 kilometres east of the capital, Rome. The scenery and historic attractions of Abruzzo are similar to the more popular region of Tuscany, but you are less likely to find large groups of tourists in this quieter area, even in the height of summer. In the winter months, the region's skiing resorts are popular weekend destinations for Romans, while in the summer you can always find peace and quiet on the long stretch of Adriatic coastline and the many pleasant, sandy beaches. Abruzzo is made up of four different provinces, which all have a different appeal to tourists.

Bordering the Adriatic, Chieti is a mountainous area that would be an ideal destination for those who enjoy the outdoors. Hiking, cycling and more extreme sports like rock climbing and kayaking are all popular pursuits in this area, or you could take a tour of the vineyards where local wines are produced. The coastline here is rocky, though there are some beaches, usually small coves with few tourist amenities.

L'Aquila is the largest province in Abruzzo, located entirely inland, along the region's western border. This mountainous area is where many of Abruzzo's skiing resorts are located, and summer skiing is also possible on the Calderone, the southernmost glacier in Europe. Water sports are popular in L'Aquila, despite its lack of access to the sea, as there are several rivers that are ideal for canoeing and kayaking, as well as natural and artifical lakes for sailing and swimming.

Pescara is the smallest of Abruzzo's provinces, also home to the largest city, which shares the area's name. Consisting of mountainous areas and popular tourist beaches, Pescara is the most popular region with tourists and is also home to some of the best fish restaurants, serving produce which is caught in the Adriatic fishing ports. The city of Pescara itself boasts not only over 20 kilometres of beaches, but is also home to several historical churches and interesting museums, including one dedicated to the famous 18th century poet Gabriele d'Annunzio, who was born in the town.

Teramo, in the north of Abruzzo, is one of the most diverse regions, offering winter skiing, some of the busiest tourist resorts and agricultural areas where vineyards produce local wines. Alba Adriatica is one of the most popular seaside towns in the area, attracting nearly 50,000 mainly Italian visitors each year. The long sandy beach is backed by a large promenade, and the lively nightlife means that Alba Adriatica is always full of young Italians looking to party during the summer months. Inland, the mountain town of Civitella del Tronto is worth a day trip to visit its impressive medieval fortress and prehistoric caves.
