Vilamoura is a purpose-built holiday resort along the coast and is one of the largest such resorts in Europe covering 20 km². It was originally built in 1974 by a wealthy banker and has been increasing in size since. Being designed to maximise tourism in the area, it bears little resemblance to traditional Algarve, however Vilamoura caters to everybody whatever their interests. In fact, many Portuguese celebrities are known to visit Vilamoura and even well known celebrities from around the world have accommodation here including Cristiano Ronaldo and Teddy Sheringham. You may even spot them yourself.

The marina is at the centre of the resort, which is usually really popular and has many bars and restaurants along the seafront. During the day it is quite pleasant and relaxing especially when it gets hot although it can get much livelier at night. There is said to be a thousand berths in the marina. And there are beaches on either side of the marina that are also quite popular and are quite attractive. Other places of interest include a casino and a golf course, however you may be interested in something more active in which case there are numerous different sports in the resort on the land, water and in the air. There is a regular train that travels around the resort if you want to sightsee or just quickly get to another part of the resort. Its probably recommended that you get this train a few times in order to see all that Vilamoura has to offer. There are many excellent restaurants throughout the resort that offer a wide range of cuisines.

Due to its location, Vilamoura is a great place to go on holiday. The accommodation is first-rate and you can be as active or as laid-back as you wish; the resort caters to everyone and is sure to satisfy you immensely. You don't ever have to leave the resort and you would still enjoy an exceptional holiday. But if you do want to travel and explore Algarve, there are many villages and towns relatively close by which you can discover a more typical Algarve culture.
