Tavira is a fishing town in the eastern Algarve along the Gilão River, a few kilometres away from the coast. It remains a very traditional town with its own characteristics and although popular with visitors has managed to escape the grip of tourism. Even so, parts of the town have been redeveloped in recent years and now accommodate further shops, cafes and restaurants along by the river. There is a seven arch bridge over Gilão, which has been reportedly in use since Moorish times although was remodelled during the 17th century. But because of the floods in 1989, the bridge has never completely recovered and is currently only available to pedestrians. At low tide, there are usually people wading into the river to collect clams.
Tavira is known for its numerous churches within the town; there are over twenty at least. Each of these fine churches has their own history, so if you're interested it’s worth visiting some to learn more about them. Also of historical interest is the architectural heritage, which owes to the various different rulerships throughout the town's history. There are museums where you can learn the finer details or you can just take a pleasant walk through the town and see what there is for yourself.
Those just wishing to enjoy a relaxing holiday or be entertained are well catered for. There are several quality restaurants and cafes about the town or you can sit in one of the beautiful gardens or squares. Or if your idea of relaxation is to casually stroll from shop to shop seeing what’s available, then there is the Gran-Plaza mall, which has the largest selection in Tavira.
Tavira is a great place for anyone wishing to spend their holiday in the eastern Algarve. It is pleasant and traditional but with also many modern aspects. It may not have a huge amount of specialised tourist attractions but what it does have does attract many visitors.
