The Algarve is a popular destination for those on package holidays, who only want to spend time on the beach, as much as it is for those who are interested in the history and culture of Portugal and its towns. Eastern Algarve is the name given to the stretch of coastline from Faro, where the region's main airport is located, to Vila Real de San Antonio on the Spanish border.

Although the Eastern Algarve is more famous for its unspoilt natural scenery and outdoor attractions, there are still a few small towns and villages that cater to the more typical tourist. Faro itself is home to an attractive modern marina, where you can enjoy locally-caught seafood, while the purpose-built resort of Altura has everything you need to make your holiday complete, so you could, in theory, never leave the complex – though it would be a shame if the beach was the only thing you saw of the Eastern Algarve! The only major resort on this stretch of coastline is Monte Gordo, with its perfect golden sands and family-friendly entertainment. While the town could never be described as picturesque, it has everything you need for a pleasant beach holiday and is only a short drive from some of the more attractive parts of Eastern Algarve.

The Ria Formosa lagoon, which stretches east from Faro, is an ideal destination for those who enjoy nature, as it is home to dozens of unusual species of birds and plants. The waters of the lagoon can often be a refreshing and quiet alternative to the beach in the summer months too. Also at the Faro end of the Eastern Algarve is the Barril Beach on the Ihle de Tavira. Although it is an island, you can reach Tavira by a narrow pontoon bridge – a journey that children and adults of all ages will enjoy. Once at the beach you can enjoy safe and clean swimming with a gorgeous view of the coastline in either direction. There is even a tourist train if you prefer to make part of the journey on wheels rather than on foot.
