Lagos is a large modern town in western Algarve that is popular with tourists and locals alike for its many shops, restaurants and bars. There are also several accommodations located within and around the town. Being an historic city, the centre has a fortified city wall around it dating back from the 8th century and was built by the Moors. It currently has a prosperous fishing industry with a large harbour. Of course, fish and seafood is commonplace in Lagos' restaurants with Cataplana being a local delicacy. With so many little streets around town, it can be easy to get yourself confused but just remember that to get back to the town centre, all you have to do is follow the hill down. It is a vibrant busy town where there is always something entertaining going on. When Portugal is playing football on TV, local cafes will have large screens in the square so that everyone can watch them.
Just off the square by the Santa Maria church along a cobbled street you'll find the 'golden church' of St. Anthony. This church was rebuilt in 1769 and is now accessed by the museum along the side. Both the museum and the church are quite interesting visits. Opposite the church is the Slave Market dating from the 15th century where slaves were once sold. The building has long since become a much more respectable art gallery.
Lagos also has its own beaches nearby. Although they are quite popular, they are also large so its not likely they will get overcrowded. Each of the beaches has their own unique personality and atmosphere so you'll be able to find one that is suitable for yourself. The statue of the local saint, São Gonçalo watches over two of the beaches. Surfing is also popular here depending on the season and the wind.
