Albufeira is a city along the coast of central Algarve. For the last fifty years it has been popular with tourists and has been steadily growing and expanding more every year with five million visitors expected to come to the city annually making it perhaps the most visited location in all of Algarve. Before this, it was just a small fishing village. It is a modern city with all the latest services and facilities; nevertheless, the traditional Portuguese white washed buildings throughout the town serve as a constant reminder that you're still in Algarve.

The city is split into two sections in terms of tourism; The Strip in Montechoro is the trendy area that is commonly populated by the age 20 - 30 crowd of tourists, while the Old Town section about 2km - 3km away is the more family orientated area; they're not within walking distance of each other but it will be easy to find a cheap bus or tourist train which will take you between the two. The Strip is where you will find the night clubs, the trendy restaurants and shops; its basically the Blackpool of the Algarve. Whereas the Old Town retains much of the fishing village it once was with its traditional Arabic architecture and narrow cobbled streets with small houses going up into the hills. The Old Town is widely considered to be the nicest and more sophisticated place of the two however it can be too quiet and tame for some even though the Old Town does have bars that are open until 4am during the summer. There is always something going on in the Old Town even if its just a puppeteer or a band playing live music in the streets. Of particular note in the Old Town, there is an outdoor escalator which will take you up and down the large hill in town - very convenient! English is widely spoken in Albufeira and it is common for menus in restaurants to be written in three or four different languages. Wherever you are in the city, you can be sure to find a quality restaurant close by; Albufeira is full of them! The locals are friendly and knowledgable about their city so feel free to start a conversation with someone if you ever want to learn more something.

There are two beaches in Albufeira - Praia do Túnel and Praia dos Pescadores. Both beaches are quite lovely and of high quality - they are one of the main reasons why Albufeira attracts so many tourists. The beaches are overlooked by several restaurants and cafes; you're guaranteed that services and facilities necessary for a pleasant day on the beach are close by. There is a marina on the outskirts of Albufeira that is recognisable by the pastel colour buildings along the seafront which gives it a friendly cheerful atmosphere to walk around or eat in at one of the restaurants here - they really are everywhere! The marina is a good place to sit somewhere and relax, just watching the world go by as long as you want. There are also dolphin statues along the walkway of the marina that are interesting to see. The marina is the place where you can go on boat trips and fishing trips if you so wish. The boat trips will take you to some particularly fascinating places along the coast that you wouldn't see normally.

The distinct differences between the two sections of the city make it an ideal location to come for a holiday whether you are young or old, into partying or prefer peace and relaxation. Even if you're going mainly for the nightclubs and the bars in Montechoro, its still worth visiting the Old Town during the day. The beaches are close by and are very attractive, you'll probably spend several days of your stay just on the beach. A hire car is not necessary if you're staying in Albufeira itself unless you particularly want to go exploring other areas close by of Algarve. Everything you could need is right here and only a short walk or bus/train journey away. Also, remember that just because Albufeira is less popular during out of season months, its still quite pleasant to come to and every shop and restaurant is open as normal - if you're not interested in the hot sun of the summer, you are still welcome to stay and enjoy the rest of the attractions just with much less crowds.
