The Turquoise Coast, also known as the Turkish Riviera, is a stretch of coastline in south-west Turkey which runs from Cesme to Alanya. Home to some of Turkey's most impressive ancient ruins, including two “Wonders of the Ancient World”, the Turquoise Coast is equally well known for its stunning natural scenery and excellent beaches in resorts such as Bodrum and Marmaris. This coastline is situated on the border between the Mediterranean and Aegean Seas and enjoys a warm climate all year round.

Turkey is becoming more and more popular as a package holiday destination, thanks to its excellent weather, unspoilt beaches and fascinating cultural attractions. The Turquoise Coast is no exception and boasts some of the best known and fastest-developing holiday resorts in the country. Bodrum is not only home to one of the Wonders of the Ancient World, but also a bustling port and marina and several family-friendly beaches while nearby Marmaris is one of the livelier resorts, popular with young travellers looking for a mixture of sunshine and evening entertainment.

The largest city of the Turquoise Coast is Antalya, which is increasingly popular with tourists thanks to its mixture of history and beautiful beaches. A common sight off the Turquoise Coast is the traditional Turkish sailing vessels called “gulets”. Visitors can take day trips known as “Blue Cruises” in these vessels to explore the Turquoise Coast's more secluded beaches and coves from the water.

Those with an interest in history, particularly ancient history, are spoiled for choice when it comes to the towns and villages on the Turquoise Coast. Most communities have several buildings or ruins constructed by one of the ancient civilisations, which lived in this region, but the area's big attractions are the Mausoleum of Maussollos in Halicarnassus and the remains of the Temple of Artemis in Ephesus, two of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World.

The ruins of the Mausoleum of Maussollos, which was built in 350 BC, are located near the resort of Bodrum and although many of the best statues and relics are now in museums around the world, the site gives visitors and idea of the huge scale of the building. Meanwhile, the Temple of Artemis, which is located near the modern town of Selcuk is thought to have been built some time in the 8th century BC. Little remains of the original building aside from the foundations, but there is a museum about the history of the temple in Selcuk itself.
