Santa Pola is a bustling coastal town that was originally built upon the ruins of an abandoned Roman village and later in the 16th century, a castle was constructed to defend the town against pirates. An archaeological museum in the town explains these significant events to Santa Pola in great detail. The town is primarily a prosperous fishing and tourist town and becomes quite popular during the summer. As well as its impressive castle and beautiful views especially from the Plaza del Calvario, Santa Pola also has a salt mine within a natural park just outside of town. Between the salt lakes and the sea is the beach that stretches for miles. There are beaches that are suitable towards families and those that are more ideal for windsurfers and divers. Having a Mediterranean Climate means that it will be quite hot during the summer months while mild in the winter. Other sports within the town include tennis and golf.
Shopping in Santa Pola is typical of regular coastal towns in Spain. There are the usual gift shops and souvenir shops with supermarkets and hypermarkets for the essentials. There are also markets pretty much every day with a flea market on Saturdays. There is a good choice for quality eating out in Santa Pola with a variety of restaurants, cafes and bars to go to. Being a coastal town in the fishing industry, fish and seafood feature in many restaurants. Although the nightlife in Santa Pola can get lively, it’s not quite as lively as Alicante and Benidorm. Ideal if you enjoy your nightlife without taking it to extremes.
