Gran Alacant is a purpose-built resort between the Costa Blanca's main airport of El Altet and the older town of Santa Pola. Building on Gran Alacant was started many years ago, and it has expanded over the decades until it is now the size of a small town, with all the usual amenities like banks, supermarkets, pharmacies, bars and restaurants. It is very popular with the British ex-pat community, and consequently you can find many British bars in Gran Alacant, as well as events and entertainment aimed at English speakers.

Gran Alacant itself is little more than a collection of private holiday homes and apartments, shopping centres, bars and restaurants. The facilities available mean that if you are visiting the Costa Blanca just to soak up some sun and enjoy your nights out, then Gran Alacant has all you need to keep you entertained. The Carabassi beach is the largest in the Gran Alacant area and was recently awarded a blue flag for cleanliness. A new walkway was completed in 2010 which allows visitors to walk the length of the sands, while other facilities include beach bars, showers, toilets and children's play areas. In the sand dunes, some parts of the beach are for nudists, but these areas are well signposted.

There is a large festival held every summer in Gran Alacant during the month of July. If you happen to be visiting the area around this time you can enjoy a selection of Spanish entertainments, such as flamenco dancing and music concerts, as well as sporting events and children's activities during the day.

There are several interesting and beautiful older towns near to Gran Alacant, including Alicante itself, with its large old town and fortress, busy beaches and marina area. Although its popularity as a tourist resort has been surpassed by Benidorm, Alicante is still very popular with local people. The nearest town to Gran Alacant is the smaller coastal resort of Santa Pola, an old fishing port with lots of Roman remains still standing in its streets, including a 4th century house and business warehouse. As you might imagine for a fishing port, the food in Santa Pola's restaurants is dominated by seafood, and many of those by the harbour have been open for decades. Reservations are essential on weekends, when many of the tables are full of local families celebrating.
