Most tourists only know Alicante as the airport where they arrive if they're staying in one of the many Costa Blanca resorts, but the town itself is well worth a visit. More popular with locals and Spaniards on holiday than neighbouring Benidorm, Alicante is home to some great Spanish restaurants, serving local specialities, and has several excellent beaches. The impressive old town is the main attraction, however, and is a common day trip for those staying in other resorts in the area.

The Costa Blanca is famous for its beautiful beaches, and Alicante itself is no exception. In the town centre there are several areas of sand where you can step off the bus or train and straight onto the beach. Although the port area here has more large cargo vessels than pleasure crafts, the authorities have worked hard to keep both beaches and water clean so you don't need to worry about pollution from the nearby harbour. San Juan beach is perhaps the most popular and always fills up early on summer weekends. As well as having the usual amenities, such as showers, snack bars and play areas for children, the San Juan beach even has its own golf course!

If you are looking for somewhere quieter, the huge Saladares beach is one option. Over 16 kilometres long and located away from the tourist part of Alicante, there is always plenty of space, even in the busiest months. A few kilometres away from Alicante, and best reached by car, are the Cabo de las Huertas coves, a stretch of rockier coastline which has created smaller, sheltered beaches which are ideal for swimming and diving. Be careful which cove you choose, however, as some have been designated nudist beaches.

The fascinating old town of Alicante winds its way through narrow streets to the Castle of Santa Barbara at the peak. It can be quite a long, hot walk in the summer, but is worth it not only for the views from the top, but also for the chance to explore one of the largest medieval fortresses in the whole country. Surrounding this main fort, there are other smaller castles, churches and beautiful areas of greenery. You will find some of the best restaurants in this area too, usually in the lower streets around the fortress, where traffic is banned on evenings to allow tables to be put outside.
