The coastal town of Mazarron is located near Murcia on the Costa Calida, a popular holiday destination for Spaniards and Europeans. Not only does the area offer excellent beaches and family amenities, but it is also home to plenty of restaurants and bars, serving local specialities. For those who prefer to be more active on their holidays, there are plenty of walks in the area, including some to interesting historical attractions.

The main reason most tourists visit Mazarron and the Costa Calida is for the outstanding beaches that line this stretch of the Mediterranean coast. Mazarron itself is home to nearly 30 kilometres of sands, some which are more suited to water sports, while others are ideal for families and small children. The longest beach in the area is actually located at the nearby village of Bolnuevo and is an impressive 1600 metres in length, meaning that even in the busy summer months, you should be able to find some space to sunbathe. On this beach you can also enjoy some of the usual water sports available for tourists, such as wind surfing, parasailing or for those who prefer to take things at a more relaxed pace, you can just hire a pedalo and go for a swim. Smaller beaches, such as the Playa de Nares and the Playa del Castellar within Mazarron itself, are more sheltered and provide a safer swimming environment for young children.

Heading away from the coast and into the town itself and the hills behind it, visitors can enjoy the unique sight of the Bolnuevo Erosions, natural sculptures formed by the wind and rain over centuries on sandstone rocks, or you can clamber onto the cliffs themselves to marvel at the Torre de los Caballos, an early defensive fort designed to protect this stretch of coastline from pirates. For a more challenging walk, you can always tackle the Cabezo del Faro, one of the highest points on this part of the Costa Calida and the site of a large, modern statue of Christ on the Cross next to the lighthouse that gives the peak its name. You can enjoy fantastic views across Mazarron and up and down the Costa Calida in both directions from the cliff-top, as well as inland towards Murcia. The path is not too steep, though is unsuitable for pushchairs and wheelchairs. Popular day trips in the region for tourists staying on the coast are inland to the city of Murcia, which is also the nearest airport to Mazarron, and along the coast to the historic city of Cartagena.
