Mar Menor or “little sea” is the name given to an area on the Costa Calida, between the Costa Blanca and Costa del Sol, where a unique geographical feature has created a salt water lagoon. La Manga del Mar Menor, “the sleeve of the little sea” is a thin strip of land that has created an area of water almost sealed off from the Mediterranean; a perfect spot to go swimming at almost any time of the year. The area is probably best known for the exclusive golfing resort of La Manga and its championship golf courses – and as a destination for footballers on weekends away with their clubs!

The lagoon itself is well worth a visit if you are staying in nearby Torrevieja or Murcia itself. You can walk along the “sleeve” and enjoy the view over the water back towards land or out to sea. Even in the cooler spring and autumn months, the water temperature in the lagoon never drops too low, as it is only around eight metres deep at its deepest point. Close to shore, the beach slopes down very gradually making it an ideal spot for families to spend a safe day by the sea. There are beaches on the Mediterranean side of the “sleeve” too, so you can choose whether you would rather swim in the lagoon, the sea or both. There is even a small village at the very tip of this tiny strip of land, which you can either walk or drive to, and make sure you reward yourself with a cool drink at the exclusive yacht club once you get there.

The courses at the golfing resort of La Manga are open to non-residents too, although the three courses are so popular that you shouldn’t expect to just turn up and get a tee time in the peak season. Even if you're not a golfer, La Manga is a great place to visit or even stay. It has all the facilities you would expect of a purpose-built resort, including bars, restaurants, sporting amenities and even entertainment. There are private homes which can be rented and also a five star hotel. Golfing widows can treat themselves to an afternoon in the spa while their husbands play a round of golf, and there are even activities organised for kids to take them off your hands.
