Puerto de la Cruz is a city along the northern coast of Tenerife and is a popular place with tourists who enjoy its modern urban city close to amazing black sand beaches and stunning blue waters. Although thousands of tourists come every year, the city firmly keeps tight hold of its Canarian nature. Popular with Spanish tourists during the summer, many Northern European tourists also come during the winter for its mild climate.
There are various places of interest in and around Puerto de la Cruz, including Costa Martiánez and the Anglican church. The archaelogical museum may be small but is quite important and collects a large number of artifacts from Gaunche culture including the Guatimac; the figurine of a gaunche idol. The Loro Parque ("parrot park") zoo has a large variety of different animals and plants to be seen including rare and lesser-seen species, putting on several shows and performances daily.
Several festivals take place in Puerto de la Cruz that are popular with locals and tourists alike. La Sardinada is the main festival highlight of the year taking place in July, with several sardine related activities and games as well as The Burial of the Sardine in which a large papier maché sardine is "blessed" by a man dressed as a bishop who lights the sardine on fire followed by a firework display. The Festival de Aeromodelismo is an annual event taking place near the harbour and is celebrating its 30th anniversary in 2011.
There are almost three hundred restaurants located in Puerto de la Cruz that it would be impossible to not find a place where you want to eat, however the sheer choice to be had will mean that it may take a while to decide where to go, especially since food here is known for being relatively cheap.
The old town is typically Canarian based around the old fishing port featuring narrow cobbled streets with traditional little shops, restaurants and other assorted quaint places to see and visit.
