The Silver Coast (or "Costa de Prata" in Portuguese) along the west coast is a quiet area of Portugal compared to other better-known areas. However those who do come to the Costa de Prata will be surprised at how much there is to discover here. There are several small villages and towns that are traditionally Portuguese; these are generally quaint and rural, living life at a slow pace but this is part of the attraction - its easy to relax in the peaceful beautiful surroundings while enjoying a nice meal or drink from a local restaurant or cafe perhaps afterwards casually browsing the town's little shops which sell handicrafts and other hand-made gifts such as embroidery, ceramics, even various sweets. There are also a few large shopping centres in the region with many national chain stores and some cinemas.

Many of the larger towns along the Silver Coast are rich in their own history and its worth stopping by some of them if you're interested and have the time to find out more about their history; you will be quite rewarded by doing so. Óbidos is one of these and is a beautiful walled town, with a magnificent castle at the highest point in town - the town was originally a wedding present from King Alfonso in 1210 to Queen Urraca and was passed down to the queens of Portugal until 1910 when the monarchy was overthrown. Every July, the castle of Óbidos holds a medieval fair which takes the whole town back to as it was during the middle ages with music, events, performances and traditional cuisine. And in November, Óbidos holds the International Chocolate Festival in which you can see some truly amazing sculptures made of chocolate, see chocolate being made by the experts, make your own and watch a performance about chocolate.

A short drive away from Óbidos, there is a great 18 hole par 72 golf course at the beachside resort of Praia D'el Rey which should be the first destination of anyone interested in golf coming to the area. Its worth staying at even in nobody in your party is a golfer or will use the golf course. It has a wide range of services and facilities including pools, a restaurant and a gym.

The beaches along the west coast are quite stunning and all deserve their Blue Flags; there are many beaches but it doesn't matter which you go to, you'll find a quality beach and looks beautiful. Some will become crowded during the summer in the more popular places and several cater towards watersports such as surfing, skiing, jet skiing, sailing and others. Sea fishing is also a popular pastime along the coast.

With its gorgeous beaches, interesting villages and towns and expansive countryside, the Silver Coast (Costa de Prata) is a great place to come for a holiday if you're looking to get away from the crowds. Although it can be quiet in some areas, there is always something enjoyable to do or see for the whole family.
