The mountainous region of Languedoc-Rousillon runs along the Mediterranean coast to the Spanish border. Encompassing everything from beaches to skiing resorts and medieval castles to natural wonders, there is more than enough in this region of contrasts to keep visitors occupied. There are several places you could choose to stay, depending on your interests and budgets. The modern seaside resorts are ideal for those on a family holiday who might be looking for cheap guest houses or campsites, while the main town of Montpelier has plenty of options to suit all pockets. If you’d prefer to stay in the mountains, the popular fortified town of Carcassonne has plenty of hotels or you could always explore off the beaten track and find accommodation in one of the smaller Pyrenean villages.

While not as popular as the Cote d’Azur further east, there are still several pleasant beaches and seaside resorts in Languedoc-Rousillon, such as La Grande Motte, with its modern hotels and amenities, Le Graud-du-Roi, a more traditional town with a large marina, and Cap d’Agde, home to miles of sandy beaches and the area’s only naturist resort. For sea, sun and sand with a difference, head to the Thau lake, an inland sea connected to the Mediterranean by streams and canals. The town of Sete is located on the strip of land between the two bodies of water and has beaches on either side.

Carcassone is probably the most famous of Languedoc-Rousillon’s historic towns and villages, with its impressive medieval fortifications featuring ramparts and no less than 52 towers. The “Ville Haute” refers to the castle area, while the “Ville Basse” consists of the narrow streets below where many of the ordinary people lived in centuries gone by. Carcassonne is very popular with visitors these days, and is often quite crowded in the summer months. There are other fortified villages in the Pyrenees mountains that may well be quieter, such as Castelnou and Eus, towards the Spanish border.

If you prefer to view the magnificent Pyrenees mountains from the comfort of a moving vehicle, rather than on your own two feet, the train between the towns of Villefranche-de-Conflent and Mount-Louis is the route for you. A regular passenger train, rather than anything set up for tourists, this train is nevertheless always popular with visitors, passing across high bridges and through mountain tunnels and offering some of the best views of the surrounding scenery – and all without getting a blister! Head further north into Languedoc-Rousillon and the region becomes better known for its caves than its mountains, including the Desmoiselles cave with its underground “cathedral” – a cave with an 80 metre roof that is decorated by natural geological formations and man-made works of art. Even the entrance to the cave is fun, as you travel underground on a funicular railway to reach the best sites.
