Situated on the Mediterranean coast of France in Languedoc-Rousillon, the holiday resort of Cap d'Agde is famous for one thing; naturism. Popular as a naturist holiday destination for many decades, it is one of the few areas where naturists probably outnumber those who prefer to keep their clothes on and on many stretches of beach in this area, nudity is mandatory. Despite all that, the resort is very family friendly, with signs warning against “lewd behaviour” and lots of entertainment for children. If you're interested in trying out naturism, a friendly resort like Cap d'Agde would be just the place to give it a try...
There are 11 beaches in the Cap d'Agde area, and each is clearly signposted as to whether nudity is mandatory, tolerated or banned, so be sure to check the signs before setting up your sun bed. Some of the best clothed beaches include La Tamarissiere, a long stretch of sand which is backed by a pine forest, providing plenty of shade, while Richelieu is especially suitable for children, with a sheltered area for swimming and a soft sandy beach. The beach attached to the naturist village is actually difficult to just stumble across as access is only allowed from within the resort itself. Non-residents are allowed to use the facilities, as long as they register at reception, though you will find that people choose to go nude on some of the smaller coves on this part of the coast too.
The town of Cap d'Agde itself has all the amenities you would expect of a holiday destination, with plenty of accommodation to suit every budget, bars, restaurants and lots to keep the kids happy. It also has a charming old town, a bustling port and lots of water sports centres. So there really is something for everyone. Children are very well catered for, with play areas throughout the town, mini golf and even a kids club run by the town council on the Richelieu beach. Agd'Aventure, a tree-top adventure park, is aimed at older children while kids (and adults) of any age will enjoy spending a day at the town's water park. If you are unlucky enough to have a cloudy day while in Cap d'Agde, take the family to the aquarium or head out to the Fort de Brescou on an island in the bay. Boat trips are a great way to see Cap d'Agde and the coast, whether you are heading to the fort or not, and there are excursions of varying lengths available either in the Mediterranean or up the Canal du Midi which heads inland from the sea at this point.
