Welcome to our selection of holiday homes to rent in Fumel, France.
The small town of Fumel in southwest France is located in the heart of the Aquitaine countryside. Home to two impressive castles, the town is a popular day trip destination for visitors to the departement of Lot-et-Garonne. Not only for its historic significance, but for the outstanding natural beauty of the surrounding scenery. After spending time exploring the castles of Fumel, take some time to explore the Aquitaine countryside, either on foot, by bicycle or even on horseback.
The town of Fumel may only be small – with around 5,000 inhabitants – but it is home to two large and historically significant castles. The rest of Fumel is a pleasant, traditional village, with narrow, winding streets, medieval churches and pleasant cafes and bars to refresh yourself. The first castle shares its name with the town, and is more of a country home than fortress. There was an older castle on the site of the newer one, but that was destroyed in the Middle Ages when the current building was constructed. The house itself features restored rooms, works of art and exhibits about the history of the building and the military action that saw the original castle attacked. The gardens, however, are the bigger attraction, featuring shady terraces, flowerbeds and the outdoor theatre, bordered by many different varieties of trees and the site of musical performances in the summer months.
The Bonaguil Castle is more of a traditional fortress, with the oldest parts of the building dating from the 13th century. Extra parts were added in later years to make the castle more comfortable as a home for Margaret of Fumel. Today, visitors can not only visit the interior rooms, which have been restored to their 13th century roots, but explore the ramparts and towers which are still standing, 700 years later. You can take a guided tour of Bonaguil in English, which will help you learn much more about the building's fascinating history, while there are also cultural events and historical exhibitions held there throughout the summer months.
There are several other historic and pretty towns within a short drive, or even a short cycle ride, of Fumel, such as Sarlat and Agen. However, the countryside in this area is worth exploring in itself. You can follow one of the many marked hiking trails, hire a bike and ride on the quiet country roads or on woodland paths while the region has always been popular with equestrians too. These equestrian centres often offer day trips, even for beginners. Fumel is located on the Lot river and a local canoeing centre offers boats for hire, if you want a different perspective on the scenery.
