Troyan is a town in central Bulgaria in the Lovech province, based upon the Beli Osam River. The closest serving airport is Gorna Oryahovitsa about 70 miles away. The town is best known for the production of pottery and plum brandy.
The most interesting landmark in the vicinity is the Troyan Monastery located just four miles from the town. Built in 1835, the building is steeped in history, particularly civil war and revolution, and the walls display fascinating artwork.
The quality of the local clay soil has given rise to a long and successful pottery industry. The local museum bears testament to centuries of high quality and aesthetically pleasing pottery, while there are many shops selling such goods as souvenirs. The annual craft fair continues to celebrate the town's pottery culture.
The famous Vinprom Troyan brewery continues to produce and export the classic plum brandy of renowned quality, and the annual Festival Of The Plum is held every autumn to celebrate this time-honoured product.
The town is surrounded by three nature reserves, namely Kozia Stena, Steneto and Severen Jendem. Each of these features forests, rock formations, waterfalls and wildlife and are generally easily accessible.
