Bulgaria is a small but beautiful country in south east Europe. It is bordered by Romania to the north, Greece to the south, Macedonia to the west and the Black Sea to the east, and is spread over about 43,000 square miles. The Black Sea coast is clustered by a number of popular holiday resorts, such as Sunny Beach, Golden Sands and Varna. The land is very mountainous with the Rila Mountain Range being the highest and most well known. About a third of the country is forested and much of these forests are protected areas full of interesting wildlife such as wolves and bears.
Around 9 million tourists visit Bulgaria each year, coming from all over Europe. Apart from the attractive coastal resorts with their clean beaches and agreeable weather, inland Bulgaria can boast areas of outstanding natural beauty. Many tours are specifically geared towards exploring nature. Most resorts have a certain level of historical interest from many different time periods, and again there are tours dedicated to this. Each resort has its own brand of architecture, music, art, food and drink etc to become acquainted with. The most significant landmark in the country is generally agreed to be the Rila Monastery.
Winter sports feature quite heavily in Bulgaria. Bansko is a world famous ski resort and venue for major competitions, and other less well-known winter resorts are dotted around.
