The island of Fuerteventura is part of the Canary Islands, situated in the Atlantic Ocean off the west coast of Africa. Tourists are more likely to visit Tenerife, Gran Canaria or Lanzarote, but Fuerteventura is actually the second largest island in the group, with plenty of attractions, on the beach and inland, to keep visitors entertained. One of the best features of all the Canary Islands is the climate, which is warmer and sunnier than other Spanish resorts as they are located much further south than mainland Spain.

There are dozens of sandy beaches around the coastline of Fuerteventura, some within the main resorts and others which are more secluded and quiet. These quieter beaches are often popular with nudists, so be prepared to see tourists and locals sunbathing in the nude if you decide to stay off the beaten track! Some of the most popular beaches are the horseshoe-shaped Cala de Fuste, with its water sports, boat and submarine trips and safe swimming conditions, and the Costa de Calma in the south, where the beaches are more popular with sun worshippers than sportsmen and you can hire sunbeds and parasols at one of the numerous private beach bars. Corralejo, on the sheltered east coast of the island, is the largest stretch of sand on Fuerteventura, and is also where most of the large hotels and resorts can be found. Similarly, the beaches along the exposed west coast, like the one at Cotillo, are much windier and more suited to sports like sailing and windsurfing than sunbathing.

If you get tired of the beach, there are some pleasant small towns to take a look round, many with historical churches or weekly markets, and the scenery is ideal for those who enjoy walking or cycling. Children might need something a bit more stimulating to keep them entertained, which is where the many theme parks on the island come in. The Baku Water Park in Corralejo, the main resort, is not just the usual water park with slides and pools, but also has a range of restaurants and other dry activities like ten pin bowling and crazy golf. The Animal Experience, with its aquarium and animal shows, is part of the same complex. Meanwhile, the Oasis Park in the south of the island is a large zoo and gardens with species of animals from all over the world. You can even take a tour of the desert section of the botanical gardens on a camel!
