Greece is a wondrous country, truly the stuff of legends, where mythology has Zeus and the lesser gods magnifying heroes such as Perseus and Hercules. It is the birthplace, the origin and focal point of western democracy. The largest and biggest city is the capital of Athens which contains the famous Acropolis. Other famous historic sites are the Monument of Lysicrates dedicated to Dionysus; the Monasteries of Meteora; and the famous White Tower in Thessaloniki.
It lists well over a thousand islands with three hundred of them either inhabited or barely occupied. The islands can be reached by chartered boat trips or by regular excursions to the more popular ones.
Many of these islands including the mainland are covered in mountains offering excellent rock climbing from the more popular islands of Kalymnos, Kos and Crete to the more virgin limestone rocks of Argolis. Some of these mountains descend to create magnificent walks such as through the beautiful scenic countryside of Andros and let’s not forget the splendour of Santorini – the Greek’s most famous volcano.
Besides the mountains there are also numerous beaches that are laden with white coarse sand that are offered throughout Greece but in particular you may find the beaches at Balos, the shipwrecked Elafoinissos and Myrtos lapped by the turquoise blue of the sea - a paradise. There are also beaches that have received the Blue Flag – the European award for clean and environmentally friendly beaches. Temperatures can vary considerably depending on where you want to go to, but there are beaches that enjoy good weather all the year round.
Greece offers the challenge of rock sports, the lavishness of water sports in luscious waters as well as densely forested areas which offer great walks with excellent scenic walks and the history buff will be more than content with the rich history that Greece – the founding father of Europe provides.
