HOLIDAY HOMES TO RENT IN TOULON, PROVENCE / COTE D'AZUR.
Welcome to our selection of holiday homes to rent in Toulon, France.
Ideally located for exploring both the Cote d'Azur and the Provencal hills, Toulon is often thought of as just a base for touring the rest of the region. However, while it is true that many if the most popular destinations in southern France – Marseille, Aix-en-Provence, Monaco – are within 180 kilometres of Toulon, it would be a mistake to treat this fascinating and charming town as just somewhere to lay your head. Home to an attractive old quarter, pleasant beaches, a fascinating collection of museums and one of the best views on the French Riviera, Toulon is much more than a base for exploring other towns.
The older part of Toulon is split into two halves; the upper and lower towns. The lower is older, full of winding streets, shady squares and the town cathedral, while the upper is slightly more modern, with open boulevards, 19th century villas and monuments to many of Toulon's famous sons. Two of the medieval gates, that granted access to the old quarter of Toulon, are still standing, and either is a good spot to start your tour of the area. Maps are available from the tourist office, or you can just wander where your feet take you, exploring whatever you happen to come across. The cathedral is undoubtedly a must, as is the daily market of fresh Provencal produce, especially if you are staying in self-catering accommodation.
The Mourillon quarter is not only where many of Toulon's beaches can be found, but is also home to a number of 19th century villas, built by the rich as holiday homes on the coast. Ideal for families, many of the beaches are sheltered and are backed by shaded gardens with children's play areas. This is also one of the busiest areas on an evening, and is home to some of the best seafood restaurants in the whole region.
Standing over 580 metres in height, Mount Faron is one of the most popular attractions in Toulon. Visitors can reach the summit thanks to a short cable car ride from the town centre, and can then enjoy fantastic views over Toulon below and along the Cote d'Azur. Once at the peak, there is also a zoo, with a particularly interesting collection of wild cats, and a memorial to the Allied landings, which took place in 1944. There is also a museum dedicated to the subject in Toulon, while the beach itself is down the coast, towards St Raphael.
