The southern departement of Bouches-du-Rhone is located on the Mediterranean coast in an area of France more commonly referred to as Provence. Not only is the region home to some beautiful beaches and lively seaside resorts, but one of the biggest and busiest of French cities, Marseilles, is located here too. If you need to get away from the bustling city life, there are plenty of open spaces too, along the coast and inland, including the Camargue with its famous wild horses.
Perhaps the most stunning stretch of coastline anywhere in France is to be found in Bouches-du-Rhone. The Calanque creeks, as they are collectively known, are a group of narrow, rocky coves formed by the limestone cliffs that have eroded to form gorges that plunge steeply to sea level. It is almost impossible to make your way to the beach in some of these creeks without climbing equipment, but many are perfect for a day on the beach with a difference. The sheltered beaches are real sun traps and the calm sea inside the protection of the cliffs is ideal for safe bathing. Many of these beaches have few tourist amenities, so come prepared to rough it a little, and don't be shocked to see nudist bathers either. More traditional beaches can also be found on this stretch of coast, such as the town of Cassis, with its sandy beaches, traditional port area and busy promenade. The colourfully painted houses and pavement cafes make Cassis a really lively place to spend a few days in the summer, and there are plenty of accommodation options and amenities in the resort too.
A different kind of “beach” is found in the Camargue National Park. Here you will find sand dunes and marshy areas. Not ideal for sunbathing, but great for walking and you may even be lucky enough to spot some of the famous wild, white horses that live here. Those who prefer to explore from behind the wheel of their car will enjoy the drive on the Corniche de Cretes road, along the Bouches-du-Rhone coast, heading east from Cassis. The road actually overhangs the sea in many places and offer spectacular views of the rocky cliffs and beaches.
Marseilles is also on the coast, and has some beaches of its own, which are always packed in the summer months with locals. The city itself has always been based around the port, and nothing much has changed. The industrial harbour is not worth visiting, but the old town near the marina has some attractive streets and there are many excellent fish restaurants in the city.
