Situated in the centre of France, the departement of Puy-de-Dome is home to some spectacular volcanic scenery; perfect for fans of hiking and mountain biking in the summer, and skiers in the winter. The scenery is undoubtedly Puy-de-Dome's greatest attraction, but the volcanic landscape has some other benefits too. There are several spa towns in the area that take advantage of the thermal springs in the Auvergne mountains to provide some much need rest and relaxation. Whether you've just had a hard day walking in the mountains, or just feel like some pampering, a soak in one of these spa baths will set you up for more exploring the next day.
The most spectacular scenery is found in the south-west of Puy-de-Dome, in the Auvergne Volcanic Regional Nature Park. If you want to challenge yourself and enjoy an amazing view, then you should make an effort to try and climb the mountain that gave the region its name; the volcanic peak of Puy-de-Dome. The climb isn't too difficult, and you can drive a reasonable distance up the mountain first, if you want to make it a bit easier. There are several higher peaks which should only be tackled by experienced hikers. If you want to learn more about volcanoes and the landscape you are exploring, then you should spend some time at the interactive museum Vulcania in Saint-Ours-les-Roches.
There are several lakes within the region too, many created by the craters of long-dead volcanoes. The Pavin Lake is one of these and is very popular with fishermen who often line the banks on a weekend trying to catch trout. There is a pleasant hour-long circular walk which will take you round the shoreline of the lake. The larger Chambon Lake, a little further north, is more suited to water sports than gentle walking. There is an equestrian centre nearby which organises pony treks into the hills above the lake, while on the water itself you can try out sailing, kayaking and windsurfing. There are also several beaches, which are supervised in the summer, with shallow swimming areas ideal for small children.
The main town of Clermont-Ferrand has all the amenities you will need for a stay in Puy-de-Dome, such as tourist accommodation and restaurants, though there are several camp sites in the Auvergne Volcanic Regional Nature Park. The town itself has a pleasant medieval quarter and a cathedral that has been named a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Clermont-Ferrand hosts its own film festival every February and a local festival takes place in June.
