The Cote d'Azur or French Riviera is the name given to France's Mediterranean coastline, between the towns of Menton, near the Italian border, and Marseilles in the west. Home to some of the most glamorous holiday resorts in Europe and a popular destination with the rich and famous for decades, there are lots of campsites and cheaper accommodation which means even regular tourists can enjoy a holiday there! This is the place to come if you enjoy lying on the beach all day and partying at night, though there are plenty of family attractions too, with theme parks that will keep kids and adults of all ages entertained.

The big draw of the Cote d'Azur is definitely the coast itself. The natural beaches here are often quite stony, but there are several sandy ones, usually man-made and usually much more popular. One of the best is the small, sandy beach next to the old harbour in the town of Antibes. As it is tucked out of the way, it can sometimes be quieter than you might expect and the sea stays shallow until quite far out, making it ideal for children. The main beach at Cannes is called La Croisette and, while there are still several public areas, most of the sand is taken up with so-called “private” beaches. These will cost you a few euros a day, but you are guaranteed some space as well as your own sun lounger and parasol; vital in the heat of the south of France! You can even enjoy waiter service for your drinks and snacks and stay there for dinner, if you're having a good time.

Taking advantage of the warm temperatures and hours of sunshine, the Cote d'Azur is home to many water parks, with slides, outdoor pools and attractions for younger children too. No matter where you are staying, you are never likely to be more than a few kilometres away from one of these parks, meaning that you shouldn't have to spend too long in the traffic jams that build up on the coast road during the summer. The best is probably Aqualand near Frejus, as this has the best selection of slides and attractions; everything from a watery play park for toddlers to high-speed tunnel slides for teenagers. The OK Corral is a western-themed park with fairground rides and live shows that is open until late at night, while the area around the village of Biot, where there are several campsites, is also home to a funfair, adventure minigolf and a small water park. The best thing about these theme parks is that they are within walking distance for anyone staying in the large campsites.
