Tyne and Wear is a county named after the two rivers that flow through them. It is an area of significant industrial past with many museums laying testimony to it. Its principal cities are those of Newcastle, Gateshead and Sunderland.
Newcastle’s industrial period was predominantly in the Wool trade and coal mining and today some of its greatest contributions are that of its premier league football Newcastle United and its familiar black and white stripes. There are many historical sites such as Belsay Hall and Gardens featuring a neo-classical house and a 14th century tower and Seaton Delaval Hall bought in the eighteenth century by a naval commander whose family still live there.
Another famous soccer city is that of Sunderland who were very successful in at the end of the 19th century continuing through to the beginning of the following century. They now play in the premier league and matches played with their local rivals Newcastle are well attended. This city’s industrial period was predominantly in the shipbuilding trade and this history is now preserved in the Sunderland Maritime Heritage Museum.
Gateshead indicates its importance with the Angel of the North sculpted by Antony Gormley. Its predominant mark of the industrial period was that of iron manufacturing and this is seen throughout its many museums. It also hosts its own Millennium Bridge as well as the other residing in the capital of London. The structure of the Gateshead Millennium Bridge is significantly different and has won awards for its innovative design.
Industry is not the only mark on these northern cities in the county of Tyne and Wear.
