It measures just 166 square miles, the capital is Bridgetown and the official language is English. The language of Bajan is a form of corrupted English, which is also fairly widespread in informal everyday speech. The climate in Barbados is tropical, but the heat is tempered by consistent trade winds from the northeast. This may make the weather more pleasing to the average British tourist. There are only two seasons to take into account: The dry season from December to June and the rainy season from July to January. Temperatures are fairly consistent all year round between 24 and 28 degrees C. Barbados is a largely coral-based island, surrounded by large coral reefs, and so the sand is largely comprised of pulverized coral giving it a pleasantly soft and fine texture. Different sides of the island have different types of current, for example the east coast has the high winds suitable for sailing or surfing while the south coast has calmer waters suitable for swimming. Barbados has a distinct array of interesting wildlife. The green monkey, mongoose, red-footed tortoise and several varieties of bat can all be found inland. The seas are inhabited by large species of turtle, which are tame enough to be approached. Of course there are many different nature tour services provided such as glass-bottomed boat rides, helicopter tours, submarine tours, safari or hiking.
