The Commonwealth Of The Bahamas is an archipelago nation consisting of 29 islands and many other small islets with its capital at Nassau. It is situated in the Atlantic Ocean slightly to the east of Cuba.
The climate varies between tropical and subtropical. There are only two seasons: Summer from May to November and winter from December to April. Summer temperatures peak around 31 degrees C, winter temperatures are at lowest 16 degrees C.
Most of the islets and cays in the archipelago are uninhabited, but the three main population centres would be:
Grand Bahama. This island boasts the greatest wealth of natural attractions with limestone caves, nature tours and botanical gardens. Plenty of tour operators are based on Grand Bahama, offering exciting activities such as dolphin/shark encounters.
New Providence Island. Location of the capital Nassau and home to about 70% of the nation's population. The Bacardi Distillery and the Aqua Adventures Park are the two major attractions.
Paradise Island. Probably the entertainment capital of the Bahamas, Paradise Island is the location of Atlantis, a casino resort similar to Las Vegas. Apart from gambling, Atlantis offers cabaret, a range of watersports, dolphin encounters and a walk through tunnels in shark-filled water. It is easily accessible from New Providence Island by bridge or ferry.
Apart from the already mentioned sharks and dolphins, the whole archipelago is buzzing with interesting marine life. Sea turtles, manatees, angelfish and starfish can be viewed by means of many various marine tours.
