Uganda is a small, landlocked country in central Africa. It is surrounded by Kenya, Sudan, the Congo, Rwanda and Tanzania. To the south it is set against Lake Victoria, a lake so large it covers about one third the area of Uganda.
The biggest tourist attraction in Uganda is probably the wildlife. First and foremost the land is known as the habitat of rare mountain gorillas and many tour companies are geared towards observing them in their natural habitat; mostly on foot.
Chimp colonies come a very close second in popularity. Other noteworthy mammals include elephants, hippos, buffalos, lions and leopards.
Four national parks offer tourists the opportunity for wildlife tours: Murchison Falls, Queen Elizabeth, Kidepo Valley and Lake Mburo. Bird watching is as big as animal observing with over 1,000 native species of birds to be seen.
