La Rioja is an autonomous community province in the north of Spain and is named after the river Oja which runs through it, as does six others. La Rioja is also known for its interesting landscapes, rural tourism and historical heritage which dates back to Roman times. Despite the region being small, its natural resources have made it well known for its wine production and offers several wine tours throughout the region which allow you to sample not only some of the best wines in Spain but also its culture, history and art. La Rioja's wine producing industry has allowed it to flourish since the 16th century.
Logroņo is the pleasant hospitable capital of La Rioja and features several historic cathedrals and churches for sightseers to visit. There are also a number of extensive beautiful parks, one of the most notable being the town square which features concerts, festivals and recently a life size nativity scene over the Christmas period. It is quite pleasant to just walk through Logroņo, taking in the capital's interesting sights, friendly people and good atmosphere. Important festivals taking place in Logroņo are a music, theater and art cultural festival taking place in early January known as "ACTUAL", "San Bernabé" on 11th June which celebrates the victory and resistance of Logroņo against French invaders in 1521. And "San Mateo" celebrated on 20th September and lasts for one week.
There are several various sports that the more active tourist can participate in. Some of the more popular sports include skiing, climbing, hiking, paragliding, canoeing, fishing and golf. The mountain range La Demanda and Urbiķn lie to the south of La Rioja where skiing, paragliding and climbing is available. Whereas golfing is available in La Grajera Park, Cirueņa and on the road to Logroņo.
