The popular tourist resort of Palamos is situated on the Costa Brava in Catalonia, around 100 kilometres north of Barcelona and a half-hour drive from the nearest airport in Girona. Sitting at the eastern end of the bay that shares its name, the town of Palamos is a perfect mix of tourist amenities and traditional Catalonia, with beach bars sitting alongside the historic fishing port. The resort has managed to remain unspoilt by too much development, and is still a perfect destination for those who enjoy not just sun, sea and sand, but also learning something about the place and country they are visiting.
Palamos is a small resort and all of its beaches are easily reached on foot from the town centre. In fact, there is a waterfront path that connects all the beaches, whether you prefer wide expanses of sand or quiet sheltered coves. The main beach, or Platja Gran, is the largest and the best equipped, with plenty of parking if you are visiting from another resort or staying further out of town. As well as the usual selection of beach bars, you can also try tour hand at a variety of water sports in the summer months.
The other sandy beaches, Platja de Castell and Platja de la Fosca, are smaller and often quieter, though they are both still well equipped with all the amenities you need for an enjoyable day in the sun. Cala Margarida and Cala S’Alguer are rocky coves, perhaps not ideal for families due to the sometimes steep path you have to follow to get down to them, while Cala Estreta is an ideal mix of the two types of beach; sandy underfoot, but sheltered and quiet, away from the summer crowds.
Palamos also has an old town as well as the more modern resort, and the streets around the traditional fishing harbour are particularly interesting. The harbour is still used by local fishermen and many of the restaurants in Palamos use produce caught that day in the Mediterranean.
The residents of Palamos are very proud if their fishing heritage and the town is also home to the Museu de la Pesca, a museum on the history of Catalan fishing in this region. Guided tours are available and you can even take day trips in fishing boats to see how locals have caught their fish for generations.
