Cagliari is the capital city of the island of Sardinia, which is located off the western coast of Italy. The Sardinian name for the city is Casteddu, which means Castle. The city has a rich history and has seen the rule of a number of different civilizations; from 1324 to 1720 it was known as the Kingdom of Sardinia and in 1861 it became the Kingdom of Italy. The city is famous for its Art Nouveau buildings and a number of interesting monuments.
The climate here is similar to that of Southern California, but thanks to a northwesterly wind it can feel a little less intense. Average summer temperatures range from 21 degrees up to 30 degrees, with the months of July and August seeing the highest temperatures. As the greenest city in all of Italy, it has a fabulous array of parks and green areas to explore, such as the Terramaini Park and the Public Gardens; if you couple that with very low smog levels, you reach to the conclusion that this city is truly amazing.
The Regional Park of Molentargius is where certain unusual species of flora and fauna grow and live, such as the American Flamingo, the purple Heron and the black-winged stilt. Another park in the city is the Monte Urpinu Park, where you can see Peacocks and have a great view over the castle, port and Poetto beach. There are refreshment stands and children’s play areas, which make it perfect for picnic and general relaxing.
The city is also home to the Monumental Cemetery of Bonaria, which is one of the most important cemeteries in Europe. Other sights of interest include Nora, which is an ancient ruin site, the Tower of San Pancrazio, which offers breathtaking views of the city and the Museo Archeologico Nazionale, which is the national archaeological museum that is free to go in and has a great range of old Sardinian art. Torre dell'Elefante is another observation tower that offers some fabulous views over the city and the Monte Urpinu (mountain) is less than 2 miles from the city.
Of course there are many churches to explore here too, such as Chiesa di San Sepolcro, Chiesa di Sant'Efisio a Giorgino and the Cathedral of Santa Maria. There is also the Trenino Cagliaritano, which is a lovely railroad and many historic sites, such as Cripta di S. Restituta and Santuario e Basilica di Bonaria.
