Named after the famous French river that shares its name, the departement of Maine-et-Loire is dominated by the chateaux of the Loire valley and its many historic towns and villages. The area has long been popular with visitors, not just for the number of attractions and pleasant weather, but also for the large amount of cheap accommodation available at the region's campsites. You can spend the day walking in the scenic countryside away from civilisation, visit medieval fortresses or opulent country houses or take the kids on an entertaining day out, all within a few miles of the region's main town, Angers.
The historic town of Angers is actually located on the banks of the region's other main river, the Maine. Home to an attractive and picturesque medieval town centre, with a busy market on weekends, the town is most famous for the large fortress, with its 17 towers built from dark stone. The castle itself home to a collection of 14th century tapestries, while a museum on the opposite bank of the river holds exhibitions of modern versions of the art form.
Outside the town visitors are spoiled for choice when it comes to visiting the more luxurious chateaux of the Maine-et-Loire region. The Chateau de Serrant to the east is one of the more extravagant in this area, featuring apartments furnished with Renaissance artworks and artefacts, including a library with more than 12,000 books. The Chateau de Pignerolle to the west is an attractive country house with a beautiful garden which also houses the Communication Museum, detailing the history of different methods of communication through the centuries.
Known as the “pearl of Anjou” the town of Saumur is another popular destination with tourists. The medieval centre is dominated by a turreted castle which now houses a fine arts museum. Climb up to the higher floors to enjoy the view over the rooftops and river below. To the north of the town is Loire-Anjou-Touraine Regional Nature Park where you can enjoy the natural scenery of the region by following one of the many walking or cycling trails along the Loire.
Also close to Saumur is the Zoo de Doue, a must-see for any families visiting the Maine-et-Loire region. Home to more than 70 species of animals in natural habitats, the zoo is sited in an old troglodyte village made of natural and man-made caves.
