In the heart of some of Andalucía’s most spectacular scenery in the northern part of the La Axarquía region, 20 kilometres from Vélez-Málaga, 25 kilometres from the coast at Torre del Mar and 54 from Málaga capital. It lies 508 metres above sea level. The average annual rainfall exceeds 900 litres per square metre and the average temperature is 16º C.
Alcaucin is a pretty spanish village, situated on the lower western slope of La Maroma in the Sierra Tejeda mountain range. It lies within the area of Axarquia, on the scenic Route of Olive Oil and Mountains, and has a population of 1,500.
Narrow and winding streets, whitewashed houses, interior courtyards brimming with plants and flowers, stairways over uneven terrain and steep slopes attest to the Moorish design of this village, whose residents must undoubtedly have participated in the Moorish uprisings that occurred in sixteenth century La Axarquía, although this is not documented. It is known, though, that in 1569, the Moor (Christianised Moor) Andrés de Xorairán attacked Alcaucín, but this uprising like so many others was quickly put down by Christian troops.
Monuments : Church of Nuestra Senora del Rosario, Hermitage of Nuestro Senor del Calvario, Tajo de la Cueva (Cliff of the Cave).
From Alcaucin you can discover 5 touristic routes (signed posted) within Axarquia, each taking in a series of villages and scenery connected by similarity of characteristics.
